DOB - Sachin
Hello 5 Albert Square, thank you for your message. I appreciate your assistance in correcting the DOB of Sachin Joab.
I have followed his career for a number of years and saw him in a recent film called Lion. I also read that he in another upcoming film currently being filmed called Hotel Mumbai.
I noticed that Wikepedia has notated Sachin Joab's DOB as 1978. I have searched articles, columns, reviews, interviews and have been unable to uncover his actual year of birth. I have also checked the references on his Wikipedia page and besides a couple of those references being disabled, the remaining references are still unable to substantiate his year of birth.
I then edited Sachin Joab's year of birth to indicate that it is unknown and cannot be corroborated by a valid source. It would be helpful if you 5 Albert Square could assist me in removing his unauthenticated year of birth until verified. Alternatively, as you are well versed with Wikipedia you applying the removal of Sachin Joab's unestablished year of birth would support his page.
You mentioned that it would be helpful to others if I described my changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. I did so but I am unsure if it can be viewed. I left the following summary of the amendment when saving the edit. - "Deleted Sachin Joab's DOB as that information is in fact inconclusive. The previous incorrect DOB stated that he was born November 20 1978. November 20 has not been documented or authenticated. 1978 was inconclusively endorsed by Tanu Kallivayalil (now Tanu Thomas) for the Indus Age which Tanu Kallivayalil no longer works for. Sachin Joab also has not verified his DOB to any media source or outlet which can be substantiated. Therefore, to suggest a random DOB is misleading. However, Sachin Joab's place of birth being Melbourne Australia has been documented and he himself has validated this within interviews. No such evidence has been corroborated in reference to his DOB" Thank you 5 Albert Square. RD 05:07, 17 December 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by ReachDaniel (talk • contribs)
- Hello @ReachDaniel:, firstly I will point out that edit summary is far too long for Wikipedia. An edit summary is supposed to be a brief description of the edit you have made, editors are only seeing a few words of what you put above which is why it isn't making sense.
- I can see that you are now discussing the DOB issue on the article talk page which is correct. 5 albert square (talk) 11:33, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi 5 Albert Square, I appreciate your letting me know about keeping the edit description brief. I was obviously unsure how much of the summary description could be seen. Hopefully with some practical understanding Sachin Joab's year of birth which is also suggested in his Early Life section (....."Joab was born the following year") can be removed considering there is no verification referencing his year of birth.
Rather than me removing Joab's year of birth as well as the line in his Early Life section and then it being reapplied, could you please tell me how long it may take for my contribution to be accepted considering Joab's year of birth is not known? Thank you 5 Albert Square. RD 12:19, 18 December 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by ReachDaniel (talk • contribs)
- Hi, the discussion regarding Joab's date of birth should be on the article talk page. You may need to wait some time for other editors to respond though.--5 albert square (talk) 22:18, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Habitual unsourced content
Thank you for this edit. This editor is one of a handful who habitually add unsourced content to rap music articles, and your block did not seem to change editing behavior. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:17, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks--5 albert square (talk) 00:25, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- No, thank you. Most of my edits are to small towns in the southern US, but I wrote an article about a rap musician about a year ago and have been editing a lot of music articles since then, but mostly I just revert vandalism and remove unsourced content. The editors of those articles are younger, and while they have a ton of energy and love to edit, many of the rap music articles are a mess. Thank you again for your help. Magnolia677 (talk) 01:06, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, I've attempted to explain why I've lengthened the block - because they didn't pay attention to the first one! Hopefully being blocked for 72 hours instead of 31, 36, 48 etc will give them time to reflect on what they're doing. I've also told them if they ignore this one then the length of the blocks will keep increasing. Let me know if you need any further help :)--5 albert square (talk) 01:13, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- You may want to look at this edit if you get a moment. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 01:30, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 9 January 2017.
- The writers of the technical newsletter are asking for your opinion. Did you get the information you wanted this year? Did we miss important technical news in 2016? What kind of information was too late? Please tell us! You can write in your language. Thank you!
Recent changes
- Administrators and translation administrators can now use Special:PageLanguage on wikis with the Translate extension. This means you can say what language a page is in. The Translate extension will use that language as the source language when you translate. Previously this was always the wiki's default language. This was usually English. [1]
- Wikis connected to Wikidata can now use the parser function
{{#statements: }}
to get formatted data. You can also use{{#property: }}
to get raw data. You can see the difference between the two statements. There are also similar new functions in Lua. [2]
Problems
- Some abuse filters for uploaded files have not worked as they should. We don't know exactly which filters didn't work yet. This means some files that filters should have prevented from being uploaded were uploaded to the wikis. MediaWiki.org and Testwiki have been affected since 13 October. Commons and Meta have been affected since 17 October. Other wikis have been affected since 17 November. [3]
Changes this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week. There will be no new MediaWiki version next week either.
Meetings
- The next meeting with the VisualEditor team will be on 3 January at 20:00 (UTC). During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. See how to join.
Future changes
- The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is done. It decides what the Community Tech team will work on during 2017. You can see the results.

Steppenwolf
Gah, what a can of worms. I'm coming to you directly as the admin that blocked Lazuruz, who by the way is obviously block evading at Talk:List of Steppenwolf band members. I've nominated the aforementioned article for deletion as an unneeded fork, FYI. I'm here to ask you to also block the other side of this crap, Steppenwolfman. A quick perusal of his contributions will show you he is also only here to wage the war that the already blocked User is about. It appears to be a simple WP:NOTHERE block to me. I don't know if you'd feel it within your discretion, but if you could expedite the deletion of the aforementioned article and possibly semiprotect the band's article, we can send their dispute back to reddit or twitter or wherever and get it out of our hair. Thanks for whatever you can do. John from Idegon (talk) 02:31, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, I will look into this when I get a couple of minutes. I can't expedite the deletion of the article though as it doesn't qualify for WP:CSD from what I can see. It's currently at WP:AFD so we need to allow other editors the chance to comment.--5 albert square (talk) 13:09, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
- I've blocked all the above accounts now. @John from Idegon:, in case you need it for future socks, I raised a sockpuppet investigation here. Closed the investigation now as I cannot see any other socks going by the article history and a general name search.--5 albert square (talk) 15:21, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

- There is a new opt-in beta feature of a wikitext mode for the visual editor. You can try it out.
- When you update a page with translations on wikis with the Translate extension the existing translations will be marked as outdated instead of removed. [7]
- The new version of MediaWiki was released to all wikis last week (calendar).

- The
live
option for the Tipsy notice tool has been removed. Gadgets and user scripts which use it need to be updated. [9]
Problems
- Editors who use Firefox 50 might get logged out or fail to save their edits. This is because of a browser bug. Until this is fixed you can enter
about:config
in the address bar and setnetwork.cookie.maxPerHost
to 5000. Firefox 50 is the current version of the Firefox. [10]
Changes this week
- There is no new version of MediaWiki this week because of the Wikimedia Developer Summit.

Recent changes
- You can now upload WebP files to Commons. [11]
Problems
- video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [12]
Changes this week
- There is a new magic word called
{{PAGELANGUAGE}}
. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [13] - When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [14]
- You will be able to use
<chem>
to write chemical formulas. Before you could use<ce>
.<ce>
should be replaced by<chem>
. [15] - You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [16]
- The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS:
#wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; }
You can change the number50
to make it look like you want to. [17] - Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [18]
- When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [19]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on January 17 at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
